Detailed Meaning of Asuu

ASUU is a Nigerian trade union that was established as a platform for members to defend their interests, provide leadership and service, promote sound education policies and protect their professional freedom.

As of January 1, 2006, ASUU has a membership of over 240.000 academic staff.

The union has chapters at state levels in all 36 states of Nigeria and the federal level.:4 The branches are the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for employees within the education sector. Outdoor education there is the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT).

Ike F. Udokwe has been the president of ASUU since December 2011.

Before this, in 2010, Abiodun Ogunlade became acting president after yet another prolonged strike. Ogunlade had been vice-president under Olayinka Koso-Thomas during the 2005 – 2006 strike.

Previously Kole Omisore, a professor of Political Science at the University of Ibadan and long-time president of ASUU in Oyo State, was at the helm from 2001 to 2003.

This union aims to protect and defend the rights, interests, welfare, privileges, and benefits of academic staff at all levels in universities .

The association has branches at each university where members are elected annually to represent them on the executive committee.
